Will watch tomorrow but I've always thought some kind of compulsory service would do this country and youths good. Last I heard they scaled it back to where people who complete a certain hours will get money for college. If done correctly this service could build national pride, self direction, transition into career fields etc. It will probably prepare people better for life than senior year of high school.

I would not want to be forced to do any of this service, but you know there is nothing more American than slavery. I already have more national pride than most people I know. I already know where and what I want to do in life. Rahm Emanuel is a hardcore wack-job. If you do some more research on him you will see he wants the government to control EVERYTHING. Instead of saying government controlled he just throws around the word "universal". |

But on the topic of requiring youth to put ina year or two, I agree that it would do them some good. National pride but only if you don't have to show it through support of that nation vandal? Jury duty is slavery too right? What does web bot have to say about all this?

You say you have national pride but it seems to me that you believe you dont owe your country anything for all the opportunities it has provided you. Your sense of national pride is only present until your country asks something in return.
I think a decent way of doing this is the summer after your senior year of highschool (wont interfere with college apps) you go into a program of your choosing ranging from involvement in the local community, helping to teach summer school/camps for youths, to work in the national park service, basic training (without the obligation of staying in the military), forest fire fighting, disaster response training, internship/apprenticeships in public works (anything else where demand for work increases during the summer). In return for this you can opt to be paid federal minimum wage or get substantial aid for college. I think there needs to obviously be a waiver programs to get out of it depending on circumstances but it should remain mandatory. This isnt about government/society getting the free fruits of your labor but its about increasing civic duty, civic responsibility, furthering education thru hands on experience and involvement in your country.
Rahm being a complete f***ing idiot has nothing to do with mandatory public service being a good/bad idea, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
