Haha, wow this was posted in this very forum years ago.  A new development since then though, it's only "standards compliant" if you use proprietary markup.  Ridiculous talk!

This is an update of the previous post.  Before they said that IE8 would be standard compliant but they would still follow IE6 & 7 rendering first.  You'd have to enable the feature to be standard compliant,

Now, they say it will be standard compliant by default.

yes, like latro said, standards compliant by default. and it's not proprietary markup, it's a meta element.

Oh it's meta!? Pissh.  That's what I get for reading blogs from people who have put up with IEs for 10 years, they all call it "proprietary" markup.  Personally I think it's a great idea.  And I do see the merit in having it non-compliant by default.  But that will just hold the internet back for a few more years - the last thing we need.

I read that it was meta before now, but prior to that I heard it was proprietary markup. For some reason it never registered in d brain.  Silly me.

Edit: While we're on the topic I found this to be of interest:
A real standards compliance test

I strongly hope that developers don't become satisfied with a mere passing of the acid test.  The acid test is just a simple little page designed to take advantage of some obvious flaws and far from indicates standards compliance.  I'm glad that IE8 will pass it, although I'm sure that with the advent of IE8, FF3 and Safari 3 there will be an Acid 3 test that will help make all our lives easier.
