i have an issue

i realized today that i have a commitment problem with both of my computers.
they arent really customized or anything like that.
i feel like both of them are either going to die on me or be used by others so i make them public friendly.

whats the fist step in correcting this problem so i can freak the f*** out if one dies and be thankful i have a external hard drive?
what do i need to do to rid myself of feeling the need to make my computer so generic and have it start being personal?

I don't do anything special to mine cause I'm not cool enough to back it all up and I hate redoing it when I reformat.

my girlfriend always says i'm cheating on her with my computer. little does she know it's the other way around. 

but really, what's wrong with 1 public and 1 private? just put a password on it. or two private! let those mooches get their own pc's.

the couple of times i did customize my setup i always started with the simple stuff:  changing my wallpaper and organizing my start menu.  i would get it down to 3 or 4 folders for games and different types of apps and get rid of all the extra junk shortcuts in there that i never used.

Here's my recommendation:

Do a fresh install and customise them just the way you like them.

Once that's done, take an image backup of them.  Then the next time you want to have a fresh install, just restore the image and you're golden.  Makes it so you can still have a customised desktop without having to do the work every time.
