Ok. Let me start with this disclaimer. I love the pennies. I have been reading them for a good while and have loved the irreverence and intellectual blundering of them. So please keep that in mind with the following.
I loved this game. It was good, and i ate up every second of it. Thoug
h the story line was quite shallow, and the actual game play consisted of mostly mouse clicks (you can basically play this game one handed). But it moved well, and was overall a treat to behold.
Now, the biggest selling point i feel that this game has to offer, (and this has to do with my disclaimer written above) is the buddy buddy factor. I mean, I love the pennies, almost to the point of restraining orders. And if i get to create a character that plays alongside my semi fictional heroes, then i dont really give a rats ass what i do. This also, brings up a great dynamic. Because of this they can get away with a lot of bad game play. I’m not saying that it was bad… let me explain. When you play any type of RPG or leveling system game, the first two or three levels of killing Kobolds or big ass rats, gets boring. You dont feel any type of badass. But here, the first bit was enjoyable. I mean, it was like I got to hang out with my new friends, and smack around some hoboes. Who doesnt like smacking around hoboes with your buddies? The comedic value was good but seems to run out after about the first hour or two of gameplay. In the dialog They did a pretty decent job of making it seem like you were witty enough to banter with them. And they were nice enough to listen.
To break it down, it does really well with fan fair. If you have never read a penny arcade comic in your life,
then it will be a bit esoteric. But fun nonetheless. And if you have read them for even a short amount of time you will be able to appreciate the small idiosyncrasies of the characters and how much fun it is to be apart of the world they created.
Game Play (out of five): i give it 4 shining brass knuckles out of five (they could at least do something for the smashing boxes/trashcans. i kinda hated doing it)
Visuals (out of five): i will give it 5. its cartoony, and some of the effects were glorious.
Sound who knows. it sounded like a game. some of the repeating tracks on the loading screens wore on you after a bit though.
what were the others ones we were suppose to rate on? i dont remember, but finally
Nostalgia: I will give it a erect 5. i mean. it was just to much fun to be a part of it.
