No, it’s not a horrible marketing gimmick by some bodybuilding company. Rather, a team of researchers at the Osaka Bioscience Institute have discovered and named the ‘Pikachurin’ protein.
Pikachurin is believed to play an essential role in transmitting visual information to the brain - specifically kinetic vision efficiency. In short: Pikachurn is essential for the brain to receive visual signals and helps determine the way the brain tracks moving (kinetic) objects in your field of vision. Anywho, the reason for the name is due to the Pokemon Pikachu’s ‘lightning-fast moves.’
At least nerd’s still have a sense of humor.
If you’re interested in this protein beyond the ironic, Pokemon related naming, please feel free to check out Nature Neuroscience’s article entitled:
(Wait for it…)
“Pikachurin, a dystroglycan ligand, is essential for photoreceptor ribbon synapse formation.”
If that’s not a mouthful, I don’t know what is. Yowza. It’s almost as bad as reading Joseph Conrad. ;P
