Xbox Motherboards are almost as exciting as chocolate covered lizards. So, pretty darn exciting. Electric Tuner over at Xbox Underground has discovered the new ‘Opus’ chipset. We have already seen the horrid ‘Xenon’ and ‘Zephyr’ chipsets prone to failure and RRoD from Microsoft and ‘Jasper’ is on its way. Not to mention the ‘Falcon’, which caused shenanigans at retail stores all over the nation. (Do you have any clue how hard it is to convince a salesperson to let you look inside the 360 without buying it?)
My flashlight, 360 returning, voltmeter shenanigans aside - the Opus looks promising. Designed as a replacement board for RRoD Xenons, it sports a 65nm CPU and a 90nm GPU - similar specs to the Falcon. Unlike the Falcon, it does not sport HDMI out, which makes sense considering it is meant to replace launch 360’s.
When you really boil things down, the Opus is a Falcon without HDMI. A good thing, as far as I’m concerned. Falcon RRoD rates seem to be much lower than the other chipsets thus far. Expect to see the new board in most repaired 360s.

I can’t wait for the “Jasper” boards, which are supposed to have both the GPU and CPU on one 65nm die. They will hopefully be the end to this massacre of 360’s. Although the people that profit are the guys like me who bought broken ones off of eBay to ship back to MS.

Yeah, the question is when will Valhalla ever make it to the shelves? They took so long with Falcon and are taking forever with Jasper - by the time Valhalla gets here we may very well be looking at the next gen of consoles. Maybe Valhalla will be the 1.6 of the 360 mobo scheme.
